Why Victoria took lead in rescued greyhound group

Every two weeks a group of dog owners, all bound by a love of rescued greyhounds, meets for a walk on Bribie Island.

Victoria Sublette started the Bribie Island Rescued Greyhound Walks group two years ago and it now includes several whippets and members who travel from Dakabin.

Many have responded to the need to home a huge number of greyhounds discarded by the racing industry.

First walk

“Scarborough was the nearest group to us, so I thought we should have one on the island,” Ms Sublette, an owner of two rescued greyhounds, said.

“I put an advert on social media and the first walk was on April 12, 2019, with about 12-14 people showing up. All with rescued greyhounds.

“New greyhounds are usually timid after leaving the racing industry, but happy around other greyhounds. It tends to calm them.

“We are anti-racing and passionate about our greyhounds. Anyone can join us, but other dogs must be super chilled.”

Ms Sublette’s love of greyhounds started when her cat of 16 years died.

“The vet nurse rang to ask if I had another pet …. and asked if I had thought about a greyhound?” she said.

Since that call Ms Sublette has had seven greyhounds in 11 years and says they are “super sensitive and affectionate”.

Walks are on one of three routes posted by Ms Sublette on Facebook the week before the fortnightly walk.

Bridge and back

Routes are from Bongaree to Bribie Bridge and back, from Sylvan Beach by the VMR to Sunset Park and back and a loop at Bibiyula wetlands.

All are dependent on the weather. Start times 4pm in winter, 4.30pm summer.
