Vegas 'cannot wait' for fight

Vegas: "I'm ready, fit and very hungry"

Vegas Larfield, from the All Star Boxing Academy at PCYC Pine Rivers, will tomorrow swap one of the world’s most famous boxing arenas for the newest venue – and he cannot wait.

The 18-year-old from Brendale faces Brisbane’s Jared Fisher in the first boxing promotion ever held at the Nissan Arena in Nathan, Brisbane.

It will be the third time Larfield has stepped into the ring as a professional, against an opponent with more than 40 amateur fights under his belt.

Fit and ready

But, Larfield is being touted as a rising star having stopped his first two opponents – the last in November at the legendary MGM Grand, venue of many world title fights, in Las Vegas.

“I feel ready, fit and very hungry at the moment,” said Larfield, ahead of his first pro contest in Brisbane, “I cannot wait to get into the ring on Saturday night.

“I learned lessons in Las Vegas - mainly not to rush. In the first two rounds I rushed my attacks and got caught with silly shots. It’s about being be patient and setting things up.

Nothing changes

“But my approach is just the same for Saturday. Nothing changes. I want to win, improve as much as I can and try to get better in at least one thing each fight.”

Larfield’s manager and sponsor Phil Murphy, from Oxmar Properties, says the bantamweight has “grown in stature” since one particular moment in the Las Vegas fight.

“Vegas was 18, fighting a Mexican (Juan Alberto Flores) 11 years older than him,” says Murphy, “you’d think that was an impossible task.

'He is dynamic'

“As Vegas said, he rushed and his opponent clipped him. Vegas was a little shaky for 10-15 seconds, but he came through it. I think that punch turned him into a man.

“He grabbed that opportunity and is without doubt the hardest, fiercest trainer preparing to do the best he can. He is dynamic. Others try to emulate him.”

Larfield joined the All Star Academy at the age of 12 and has been “sparring for six rounds” in preparation for tomorrow’s fight, over four three-minute rounds on the ‘Night To Remember’ promotion.
