Unusual friendship captures the hearts of animal lovers everywhere

Unusual friendship melts hearts

An adorable photo of a horse and a possum sharing an evening snack together has melted hearts in a local community page on Facebook.

Wights Mountain resident Kate Dawes shared the snap of the unusual friendship to the Samford Valley Community Noticeboard, which was met with plenty of ‘aww’ comments and hundreds of heart emojis.

Mrs Dawes said her horse Holly and the possum, which is yet to be named, have an unbreakable bond.

“From the moment they met, they have just been inseparable. They just love each other and it’s very moving to watch,” she said.

“The possum sleeps above Holly and has been there for quite a while because they are so used to seeing each other.

“I thought the possum would have been scared being so close to a much bigger animal, but it walks along the front of the stable and sits next to Holly and shares an apple.

“Holly can also be a little anxious around new people, but she’s very calm with the possum.

“Holly has a smaller support horse which we take with us when Holly is competing in showjumping competitions, but now she also has her own support possum with her every night.”

Part of the family

Mrs Dawes and her two children visit the stable nightly to bring the pair their evening treat.

“My two kids love coming down to the stable and feeding the possum. If you hold the plate out to the possum, it will grab the plate and take the apple,” she said.

“I just hope the possum will always be there. I would hate to know how Holly would feel if the possum were to leave."
