TOKYO OLYMPICS: Day 16 action and results

Day 16 Rolling Coverage

Football – Teagan Micah

8.30pm: A bronze medal has eluded the Matildas and former Redcliffe State High School student Teagan Micah by the narrowest of margins tonight.

Australia went down 4-3 to the US in a thrilling play-off for third place, but will look back a series of errors, especially in the first half, which proved costly thanks to deadly finishing.

The US scored direct from a swinging corner and latched on to every opportunity their high pressing game created to lead 3-1 at half time and 4-1 early in the second half.

Australia, whose standing on the world stage has soared in the last two weeks, rallied and pushed hard until the last second as they did against Sweden in the semis and Britain in the quarter-finals

Denied by a post

Sam Kerr hit the inside of a post and had another flying header brilliantly saved, but the US left with the medals - and on the balance of play, rightly so.

Kerr, Caitlin Foord, and Emily Gielnik were on target for Australia. Teagan Micah, who started the tournament as second choice goalkeeper, finishes as first-choice.

She may not look back at every aspect of tonight's game with fond memories, but the Tokyo Olympics appears to have been her break through on the international stage.

Micah, who lived in Redcliffe, made stunning saves against Great Britain, including a penalty and will have the 2023 Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand firmly on her radar.
