TOKYO OLYMPICS: Action and results

Rolling Coverage Day 14

Just one local Olympian in action today - Bronwen Knox, pictured above, who will be key figure in the Aussie Stingers team tonight as they close in on the medal matches in Tokyo. Updates right here.

Water Polo – Bronwen Knox

9.50pm: Heartbreak for four-time Olympian Bronwen Knox and the Aussie Stingers who bowed out of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics with a 9-8 loss to the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) team tonight at Tatsumi Water Polo Centre.

It was a low-scoring thriller, with Knox unsuccessfully taking two shots at goal in the final minutes. The drama went beyond the pool with Australian coach Predrag Mihailović given a red card for protesting a penalty to ROC, after a yellow card for an earlier disagreement with the referee.

He wasn't poolside to see Stingers goalkeeper Gabriella Palm make a courageous save that kept his team in the game.

In the end, the Aussies couldn't penetrate ROC's defence or get enough shots past goalkeeper Anna Karnaukh.

The Stingers have now lost at the quarter-final stage at two consecutive Olympic Games. They will now battle it out for the lower placings. ROC will face USA in the semi-final on Thursday.

Bronwen Knox, whose career started (and is still going) at Albany Creek Leisure Centre with North Brisbane Polo Bears 20 years ago, has been a vital part of the Aussie Stingers team throughout the competition.

She and captain Rowie Webster have guided several debutants including the Stingers' heroic goalkeeper in tonight's game, Gabriella Palm.
