The Golden Ox, ready to serve you

The Golden Ox restaurant will reopen on Saturday night to dine-in customers and no-one could be happier than owners Nick and Virginia Tzimas.

“It will be fantastic to serve people, we’ve got withdrawals,” Nick says of the reopening.

The restaurant closed to dine-in customers in line with COVID-19 restrictions in March. It will reopen to 10 guests at a time, in accordance with the State Government’s stage one easing of these restrictions.

It will open for dinner on Saturday for two sittings – 5.15-7pm; and 7.15-9pm. And lunch will be available for dine-in guests from Sunday, 12.30-2pm.

From then, the two dinner sittings and lunch will be available seven days a week.

What to expect

Nick says the restaurant will adhere to stringent hygiene practises to protect guests and staff, with surfaces cleaned before each use, paper menus thrown out after each use, and tables spaced to keep guests at a safe distance.

When asked what he was most looking forward to about Saturday night, Nick said: “In one word, hospitality, just spoiling people. That’s what we love”.

“It’s great for us because we’ve been suffering not being able to do what we love doing.”

The dine-in restaurant menu will be trimmed due to the smaller numbers, but Nick says all the favourites will be on offer including bugs Galliano.

Bookings are essential and can only be made by phoning 3283 1833. This will make it easier for the team to ensure the 10-person limit is adhered to.

Takeaway to stay

For those who’ve loved the takeaway menu, the news is good! It will remain, probably long after COVID-19.

“It’s another dimension. Quite a few guests have been asking us to keep the takeaway menu because they like the product,” Nick explains.

“They say it’s good to have more of a restaurant standard and quality, and feel and presentation.”

In the 43 years he and Virginia have owned the restaurant, Nick says takeaway never occurred to him.

“So, some good things come out of hard times.”
