Southern Cross trio hit top form

Three Southern Cross swimmers will be considered for the national competition after winning performances at the Queensland School Sport Championships this month.

Barry Pope, Mara Hoefel and Josh McDonald brought home eight gold medals between them representing their school regions.

Hoefel won gold in the 200m medley relay and 50m breaststroke

McDonald won gold in the 200m freestyle and medley relays as well as the 50m freestyle. He also took silver in the 100m freestyle.

Pope landed gold in the 200m freestyle and medley relays and 50m butterfly. He won silver in the 100m butterfly and bronze at 100m freestyle.

There were also top 10 performances from Mara Hoefel who was ninth in the 200m freestyle relay; Hudson Sturges, sixth in the 200m freestyle relay and Luke Green, ninth 200m freestyle.

Josh McDonald, fourth 50m butterfly and fifth 50m backstroke; Amelie Hoefel, eighth 50m breaststroke; Barry Pope, fourth 50m freestyle and 200 butterfly, fifth 200m freestyle and individual medley.

Zoe Wright had seven top 20 finishes, Alia de Leeuw two, Hudson Sturges and Barry Pope one apiece.

Luke Green was also among the Southern Cross eight who qualified based on times and performances.

The event saw swimmers representing Capricornia, Darling Downs, Metropolitan East, Metropolitan North, Metropolitan West, North Western, Northern, Peninsula, South Coast, South West, Sunshine Coast and Wide Bay.

The junior 10-12 years was from March 21-23 and seniors 13-19 years from March 24-26th March at the Chandler Aquatic Centre.
