Safety boost for Albany Creek roads

Safety boost for Albany Creek roads

New traffic lights and U-turn facilities will be installed as part of a State Government project to boost safety and reduce congestion at three Albany Creek intersections.

Designs have been released for the $2.8 million project, which will upgrade the three Old Northern Rd intersections.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey says the upgrades will reduce the risk of crashes, particularly for drivers turning right from Old Northern Rd into Albany Forest Dve.

"This project will improve safety for motorists turning at Albany Forest Dve, Folkstone Ave and Janice St intersections and ease local congestion,” he says.

“We want people to spend less time in traffic, so they can get home to their families and friends more quickly and safely.

New green arrow

Mr Bailey says the traffic lights at Albany Forest Dve will be modified to provide a green arrow for all right turns into the street.

"To cater for southbound traffic waiting to turn at Albany Forest Dve, we will also extend the right-turn lane on Old Northern Rd past the Folkstone Ave intersection, which will become left-in and left-out only,” he says.

New traffic lights will be installed at Janice St to allow drivers to access Folkstone Ave via a U-turn, and a U-turn will be installed at the Keong Rd intersection.

"These changes will reduce the risk for motorists trying to judge safe gaps in traffic on Old Northern Rd to access these side streets,” Mr Bailey says.

Managing peak hour traffic

"Traffic lights will be programmed to better manage peak traffic periods in the area too."

Mr Bailey says improvements for pedestrians will be included in the project.

"The new traffic lights will create a signalised pedestrian crossing at Janice St for people walking to nearby homes and the bus stop," he says.

Work is expected start in October, with the majority of construction at night due to high daytime traffic volumes.
