Performers at Showtime Stars haven't forgotten their littlest fans

Live shows might be on hold for now, but that doesn’t mean performers at Showtime Stars have forgotten their littlest fans. They’ve created a video explaining COVID-19 to kids, who may be worried or confused about what’s going on.

Showtime Stars’ Chrissy Nelson and her team would usually be performing at community events, childcare centres and schools, but COVID-19 restrictions has put a stop to this.

So, instead of wringing her hands and wondering what to do next, she co-wrote and produced a video explaining why the world had changed to young children with the help Tenielle Douglas and Chantelle Dudman.

Tenielle stars in the 30-minute video, alongside her three children.

“It’s just something we wanted to do because we’re scared as adults, let alone the little kids … they don’t understand what’s going on,” Chrissy says.

The video is perfect for parents and childcare educators to use to explain the virus and how we can stay safe, at a level that young children can understand. There’s even some yoga exercises in there to help kids relax.

It was released on April 4 and Chrissy plans to make it available to childcare centres and schools for free this week.

So, what now?

While Chrissy and her team wait for COVID-19 restrictions to ease, she’s writing new workshops and mending costumes, so the team is ready to go when they can perform again.

And they’re also sharpening their skills in juggling, face-painting and balloon tying.

“I know for myself and the team, if you love performing for little kids, that’s why you do it,” Chrissy says.

“It’s their faces – you can see them laughing and getting excited. The hugs and the high-fives you don’t get online.”
