Hundreds of new jobs at Dakabin

Woolworths Dakabin has opened bringing the first of about 200 new jobs to the Moreton Bay Region - and possibly a state-rating first.

The supermarket, part of a $35 million centre in Alma Rd, was officially opened by Federal Member for Longman Terry Young on Wednesday.

When completed in October the complex will also have a childcare centre and 15 shops, including a BWS, medical centre, allied health and gym.

New jobs vital

“With the current COVID-19 crisis, the creation of new jobs is so important to our communities,” Mr Young says.

“For some of the staff here, it will be their first job and I know how exciting that can be for a young person who is stepping out into the workforce for the first time.”

The centre has also created about 150 jobs for builders and suppliers during construction.

“We’re delighted we’re able to provide Moreton Bay residents with a great new fresh and convenient shopping experience and thrilled to offer so many employment opportunities for the local community,” Woolworths Dakabin Store Manager, Sidney Maxim says.
“Woolworths Dakabin will employ 82 local team members, including 25 aged 18 and under. We will also have approximately 50 internal transfers from stores to the new Woolworths.”

4-Star rating

Dakabin Shopping Centre has LED lights to reduce power usage, carbon-efficient refrigeration and air-conditioning and has an area to bring soft plastics for recycling.

It is targeting a 4-Star Green Star rating from the Green Building Council of Australia and if approved, will be the first shopping centre in Queensland with that rating.

A number of hygiene and social distancing measures are in place, including hand sanitisation stations at the entrance and plexiglass screens at checkouts.

For those shopping online, the store has parking bays for drive-thru pick-up.

Opening hours for Woolworths Dakabin are Monday-Saturday 7am-9pm and Sunday 9am-6pm.
