Gym looks after its members

Marcus Shultz has built a team at Breathe Health Clubs 24/7 gym, North Lakes, that shares his philosophy of doing things well, supporting members and creating a genuine sense of community.

It is a feeling of community that shines even when there are State Government-imposed COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions.

Marcus says the focus has been on keeping members safe and ensuring they got value for money.

Accounts are suspended during lockdowns, so members retain their membership but do not have to pay fees while they cannot use the gym.

“One thing I harp on about is that community touch,” he says.

Breathe Health Clubs 24/7 gym provides a supportive environment for members and is accessible for people on a budget and appealing to women who might be nervous about joining a gym.

It has come a long way since Marcus took over as a 22-year-old two and a half years ago, after serving four years with the Army.

He has worked hard to make gym membership affordable to those who would not normally be able to cover the cost, including young people from a similar battler background to his.

After-hours tags do not cost $80, but are instead $19.95, and there is no joining fee. Weekly fees range from $12.95 to $16.95.

“When people come in and see what it is, they see it’s real and there’s no catch,” Marcus says.

“All classes come with your membership. It’s unlimited, so you can do as many as you want.”

Huge variety of classes

The gym has pilates, yoga, Zumba, boxing, body pump, body combat and others under the Les Mills banner.

Marcus increased the variety of classes on offer because there was demand for it.

“Women feel very comfortable with these classes because they know what to expect,” he says.

For those not confident enough to dive straight into a class, they can arrange to do a virtual class using a big screen at the gym to see if it is for them.

There is even a creche onsite with diploma-qualified staff, so mums can work out with confidence their children are being well cared for.

An interest in fitness and desire, to set the foundations for something more, is behind everything he has done since taking on the gym.

He says he values the opinions of his members and staff and has made changes to reflect what the majority thing will work best.

This was reflected in the day-to-day running of the gym and how the team interacted with members.

Mr Schultz has taken part in classes and been an instructor as well, so he knows how they should run from both sides.

“I have high standards in regards to how things are run … a little bit of ex-Army coming out, I guess,” he says.
