North Brisbane Polo Bears won two trophies - and were so close to winning two more - at the Brisbane Water Polo Inc (BWPI) finals over the weekend.
Based at Albany Creek Swimming Pool, the Polo Bears’ 14A Girls (see main picture) and 18B Girls teams triumphed at the Valley Pool in Brisbane.
The 14A Girls’ final went down to a penalty shoot out with Bless Daly slotting home the final chance to give Polo Bears, coached by Paul Rusnac, an 8-7 victory.
There was no dramatic finale to the 18B Girls’ final, with the Polo Bears running out convincing winners 8-4.
The 13C Girls’ final was also decided by one goal with Polo Bears going down 8-7. The 14 Boys side also picked up silver medals after losing 14-3 to a strong UQ Barracudas team.
However, Polo Bears’ Girls 18A, coached by Sydney Olympic gold medallist Naomi McCarthy, pushed Mermaids all the way in their final before losing 10-9 after a penalty shootout.
The finals performances were a great result for Polo Bears which is building and growing stronger year by year.
Polo Bears have, in previous years, been strong in the lower age groups, which made the success in the 18 years age group so good to see.
