Brisbane Whale Watching

With tens of thousands of majestic humpback whales expected to travel through the pristine and protected waters of Moreton Bay, on their annual migration to and from Antarctica, you don’t have to travel too far to enjoy a whale watching adventure to remember.

Brisbane Whale Watching is the only whale watching tour operator in the region and will start daily cruises, departing from Redcliffe Jetty, from July 4.

The whales love to feed, mate and play in Moreton Bay at this time of year, and a cruise with Brisbane Whale Watching is the ideal way to see them up close.

Captain Kerry Lopez is tipping a 10-12% increase in whale numbers this year, with a reduction in boat traffic making the bay even more appealing to these gentle giants of the sea.

Her vessel, Eye Spy, is a purpose-built, twin-hulled catamaran designed to provide a comfortable experience for passengers and maximise opportunities to see the whales in action. There are three spacious viewing platforms as well as inside viewing areas for guests, so it’s easy to adhere to social distancing regulations.

Guests will receive a Gourmet Picnic Lunchbox during the five-hour cruise and there’s also a bar and souvenir store, if you’re keen to buy something special to remember your trip.

Butterfly House

Leave your worries behind and be kissed by hundreds of butterflies at Bribie Island Butterfly House.

The centre founded by Ray and Delphine Archer, and run by volunteers at Bongaree, is a sanctuary for 19 varieties including the threatened blue Ulysses butterfly.

There you can tiptoe through an enclosed butterfly garden, learn more about the stunning insects, and take a look at the work volunteers are doing in the laboratory to increase butterfly numbers.

A walk through the butterfly garden is delightful with relaxing music playing, the sound of water features and a mist adding to the experience. There’s just one rule — don’t touch the butterflies.

The centre will reopen from June 28 on Sundays and Wednesdays only from 10am-4pm. Bookings are essential to guarantee your spot, with only 100 people permitted per hourly session due to COVID-19 restrictions.
