Date set for Federal election forum

Federal election candidates for Ryan and Dickson will have the chance to face the community – and each other – at a forum hosted by the Hills and Districts Chamber of Commerce next month.

So far, the chamber has confirmed candidates from the ALP, NLP and the Greens in each electorate will attend.

The chamber’s Meet the Candidates Committee chairman Brian Battersby says while an election is yet to be called, it must be held on or before May 21, making the April 26 timing of the forum ideal.

Brian says the forum, at the Arana Leagues Club, will allow candidates to share their views about what they perceive to be the electorates’ main issues and how they will address them, as well as field questions from chamber members and the wider community.

“It will provide the community with an arena to hear political discussion free of overly enthusiastic or disruptive attendees,” Brian says.

Independent chairman

“We also have an experienced chairperson to ensure that a balanced, cordial arena will provide all candidates with the opportunity to explain why they are offering themselves as candidates.”

Bunya resident and media personality Ian Skippen will chair the event, ensuring candidates and those asking questions stay on track.

“Ian’s not a chamber member, so he will bring and independent perspective,” Brian says.

The last Federal election forum hosted by the chamber was in 2019 and Brian says that for the first time since the chamber has been hosting Federal, State and Local government elections, secondary school students have been invited.

“There will be members of the community, not-for-profits, people with political aspirations, business people and we have invited students from Ferny Grove State High School to ask about what students see as the problems facing young people,” Brian says.

The 2022 Federal election forum for Dickson and Ryan candidates is on April 26 from 6.45-9am. Tickets are from $37.50-$47.50 and include a buffet breakfast.
