D-Bay ‘Daggy Bunch’ zooms in for charity

The team at Deception Bay Community Youth Programs didn’t miss a beat during the recent COVID-19 lockdown, hopping straight onto Zoom to keep the service running – and even raising money for another charity.

Director Janine Botfield says the service is no stranger to nimble thinking, with last year’s first lockdown allowing it to deliver youth work digitally and parenting programs online.

This time round, the transition to remote working and service delivery was seamless, Janine says.

“We completed a full planning day in lockdown in a Zoom meeting, including games, dance breaks and some serious work,” she says.

Helping young people

The day coincided with a planned fundraiser for Brisbane Youth Service, which works with young people aged 12-25.

The service’s annual Daggy Jumper Day – rescheduled for August 25 - raises money by asking people to don their daggiest knits to help shine a spotlight on the issue of youth homelessness.

With the money raised, Brisbane Youth service is able to provide life-changing services and assistance for young people experiencing homelessness.

Instead of wearing their silliest sweaters in person, the DBCYP team took to Zoom to outdo each other with their most outrageous outerwear.

“We were all looking mighty fine, showing our support for Daggy Jumper Day,” Janine says.
