COVID-19 UPDATE:

COVID-19 UPDATE: Nine new cases

There have been nine new cases detected of COVID-19's Delta variant in the community in the past 24 hours and all are linked to the Indooroopilly cluster.

Deputy Premier Steven Miles has just updated the community and is urging more Queenslanders to get tested.

Today's numbers bring the Indooroopilly cluster to 18 linked cases, all are the Delta variant.

Mr Miles says the number of cases detected in the past 24 hours is the highest recorded in the past 12 months.

The latest cases are linked to a karate school at Ironside State School, and another at Brisbane Boys' Grammar school.

It takes the number of active cases to 53 and now involves students and families connected to Indooroopilly State High School, Ironside State School, St Peters Lutheran College, Brisbane Boys' Grammar School and Brisbane Girls' Grammar School. Schools are working with students and families and Queensland Health.

Mr Miles welcomes a decision by the Federal Government to declare the 11 local government areas in South East Queensland hotspots, which will ensure people affected by the lockdown will be eligible for compensation.

Those who have lost more than 20 hours work a week will be eligible for a $750 weekly payment and those who have lost less than 20 hours a week will be eligible for $450 per week. Application forms will be available from August 7.

Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young says case numbers, as is to be expected, are rapidly escalating.

"Thank you to everyone who has been staying at home. We all need to work together for the next three days if we're going to be able to lift that stay-at-home requirement," she says.

"It's vital that anyone with any symptoms at all ... it doesn't matter where you are because I don't know where this virus is at the moment ... please come forward."

Dr Young is particularly monitoring the situation on the Sunshine Coast and believes there is a link there between the Indooroopilly cluster and the two overseas arrivals with the same genomic sequence. One was treated in hospital at the Sunshine Coast. At this stage, it is not clear what the link is and she is concerned there are more cases out there.

She is urging those ordered to quarantine to stay at home - they can only leave to get a COVID-19 test, not for exercise or to shop for groceries. If they need assistance, they should phone 134-COVID.

Anyone confused about what they need to do, should phone Queensland Health or take a cautious approach and simply stay at home.

"We know it's the Delta variant, we know it can be transmitted within three seconds of exposure and we know it can be transmitted within 30 hours. So, someone could be exposed and 30 hours later, they can infect someone else," she says.

"That's why we've had to take this strong response, if we're going to manage it."

Health Minister Yvette D'Ath says there are not enough people coming forward for testing. Dr Young would like to see 40,000 people tested per day.

Mrs D'Ath highlighted the number of people who have died already in New South Wales - one person every three days, as a result of infection.

Testing site locations in local areas will be promoted via social media today and she is urging Queenslanders to be patient if there are delays.

Possible exposure sites

The list of exposure sites continues to grow. Moreton Daily will advise of any in the Moreton Bay Region, but to keep up to date, visit the Queensland Health website
