COVID-19 update: August 22

Queensland has recorded no new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, as Deputy Premier and member for Murrumba Steven Miles announces the Check In Qld app will be compulsory for taxis, limousines and ride-share vehicles from August 30.

There are now 39 active cases in the state, with 9918 tests conducted yesterday and 13,036 vaccines administered by Queensland Health.

Mr Miles said the QR code app has been incredibly successful in helping authorities with contact tracing to contain outbreaks.

"It's worked where other attempts to have contact tracing apps have failed," Mr Miles says.

He says that my mandating use of the app in taxis, limousines and ride-share vehicles, drivers and the general public will be safer.

"Adding QR codes will allow us to ensure that in the future if we have a case in those vehicles we will be able to trace it."

He says while the turnaround for installing the app is tight, it's necessary to ensure community safety.

More than 184,000 businesses have installed the app and installation was growing by about 3 percent each week, he says.

Mr Miles says the app been scanned more than three million times across the state, making contact tracing faster to contain outbreaks.
