Council dives into major upgrades

Major upgrades are on the way for three more aquatic centres in the Moreton Bay Region.

Mayor Peter Flannery said $2.4 million of works in the 2020-21 Council Budget included a new splash pad and the region’s first high-needs accessible amenities facility.

Ferny Hills Swimming Pool will get a splash pad play area and an amenities upgrade by September, ahead of the warmer weather.

Water slide

Albany Creek Leisure Centre will soon have the region’s first ever Changing Places-compliant high needs change facilities as part of a top-to-bottom amenity upgrade.

There will also be a refurbished water slide tower and new pool concourse by the end of July.

Lawnton Swimming Complex is scheduled to have an amenity block upgrade by September.

Reopened

This follows the revamp of Burpengary Regional Aquatic and Leisure Centre and major facelift and repairs to Redcliffe War Memorial Swimming Pool. The latter reopened last month after almost a year’s work.

“Council aquatic centres are a staple of many residents’ daily routines with more than 1 million visitors using our facilities each year,” he said.

“We want locals to have the best recreational facilities in all of South East Queensland, which is why we’re adding to the $9.8 million Council has invested over the past three years.

Reviews

“Council is undertaking ongoing reviews to ensure all our aquatic facilities meet the growing needs of our region.”

Councillor Matt Constance (Div 10) said this was a great boon for his community which is one of the biggest users of aquatic centres in the region.

“Albany Creek Leisure Centre is the most visited out of all Council’s aquatic centres, while Ferny Hills is the third,” he said.

“We’re a growing community so it’s vitally important our recreational facilities matching that growth and meet community needs.”
