Bribie Island Bowls Club are once again raising money to support past and present defence personnel, and they need your help.
The club is calling for volunteers to register for its Kokoda Challenge Charity Walk, which will be held throughout the month of April.
The challenge is to walk 96km, the length of the Kokoda Track, between April 1-24, finishing just before Anzac Day on April 25.
Bribie Island Bowls Club Community Coordinator Kerry Muller says participants can complete the challenge simply by walking around their own neighbourhoods.
“Depending on your level of fitness, we’re recommending participants could cover that distance in 24 days, which would be an average of 4km a day,” Kerry says.
“Participants can choose to cover the 96km anywhere that suits them, or they can join the set walking track along the Pumicestone Passage waterfront walkway opposite the club.
“You can record your daily distance at the club’s Kokoda Challenge checkpoint which will be manned daily from 6.30-9am.
“This is an exciting event to be involved in and the response to the challenge has been great
"People have shown an interest to walk the distance from places near and far for such a worthwhile cause.”
It costs $25 to register.
Money raised from the challenge will be donated to an organisation called Wounded Heroes, who support Australian servicemen and women with the financial, emotional and personal hardships that are often a part of military life.
“Wounded Heroes is a fantastic organisation that does whatever it takes to provide support services for defence personnel, and we are proud to be able to help them continue this work,” Kerry says.
Wounded Heroes was formed by Jim Shapcott in 2007.
Previously it was known as the Deployed Soldiers Welfare Association, but Jim changed the name to Wounded Heroes as he found the general public did not easily or immediately understand what a deployed soldier was.
