Big plans for award-winning holiday resort

Sandstone Point Holiday Resort has been "even more successful” than its owners expected, says director Rob Comiskey.

It came came moments after The Comiskey Group venue won the Tourism Business Excellence Award in the 2021 Moreton Bay Business Excellence & Innovation Awards.

“We put a caravan park in a place they said wouldn’t work,” Mr Comiskey said.

“We spent way more than we should have. Even Big 4 said spending $20 million on a caravan park … you guys are insane!

“We have doubled the size of it and hopefully it keeps growing.”

It took the Comiskey Group 10 years to buy the land, next to the bridge across to Bribie Island, after spotting it from a helicopter

From the air the the company saw potential for a convenient, modern getaway for visitors of all ages.

That dream became reality in 2018 when the BIG 4 Sandstone Point Holiday Resort opened. Today, just three years later, it is even bigger.

Mr Comiskey said a pump track was planned, so too a pool with a bar, an 18-hole putt putt and a “massive arcade” has been put in.

However, Mr Comiskey admitted: “It has been up and down (with COVID). We’ve had shutdowns and refunds.

“At one stage we had $1.3 million of deposits coming out of our bank account pretty quickly, which does kind of hurt you because you don’t count on that.

“But it has been very successful in other ways because people have not been able to go out of the state or overseas.

“It’s one of my favourite businesses we own. To see the enjoyment people get out of it. There’s nothing better than having a great holiday with the family.”

Mr Comiskey said the Comiskey Group had “spent this year regathering and really putting a big effort into next year.

“I think we’ll have the biggest year ever, especially with some of the acts coming,” he said.
